Assembling a New Greenhouse Kit

I have been waiting a while for the delivery of my new greenhouse kit so that I can get prepared for the new season and be able to grow my own tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and chillies.  At last, the kit arrived and included more parts than I had anticipated but not to worry. The final outcome will be a 6ft x 4ft wooden framed greenhouse.

I previously owned an 8ft x 6ft aluminium-framed greenhouse, but this became redundant a few years ago when we redeveloped the back garden. It was a good intention at the time, but I eventually regretted it, so I am now looking to put it right. Although smaller than the original one, I am sure it will be fine.

Preparation and Planning Stage

The kit came with a great number of parts, some prefabricated panels but also single pieces of timber for framing, building and securing, not to mention the array of different screws, nails and fittings

So, the first job was to organise and check all the parts against the instruction sheets and item lists and then get everything laid out in a logical order so that they would be easily accessible when needed.

Identifying each of the separate parts early on is important and can make a complicated job so much easier if prepared well. Many of the framing pieces are similar in size and appearance so to have them sorted by size before you start building will make a difference.

The Build.

Make sure that you have plenty of space in which to work, sufficient space for the size of your job and all-round access, with all the necessary tools to hand.  Where possible, a build of this size should start as near to the final resting place as is practicable.

This build started with the assembly of each of the four sides which were all made up of two separate panels.  Being on my own for this assembly it did involve a bit of a balancing act in the beginning to get at least two of the sides connected to one another so that the structure would stand upright by itself and enable the remaining sides to be assembled into the exterior shell.
